Rosie, a 7th grader at Sequoyah Middle School was referred to our School Outreach Coordinator, Alicia Vasey-Neilson, by both teachers and peers. Although Rosie is an excellent student when it comes to homework and books, she was having a hard time being able to share her thoughts and ideas with her class. Rosie is a very reserved, shy student, and her teachers and peers thought that Alicia’s Girls Group might be just the thing to help her come out of her shell. Rosie joined Girls Group last year and her confidence in sharing began to blossom.
This year, Rosie pushed herself to open up more and participated in the “Dream School” essay competition. What a success–her peers chose her essay as the winner. Rosie kept her forward momentum and became involved with another group, Scholar Voice Collaborative (SVC). Her involvement in this group contributed to her success in continued self growth. Over the last year, Rosie has started sharing more frequently with her classmates and was instrumental in putting together the SVC presentation to the principal.
